Electrolyte Levels in Dehydrated

چکیده

-1 . Dehydration of toads with empty bladders causes elevation of the sodium concentration (C) of their plasma according to the relationship : original water content C = Co x original water contentwater deficit' where Co is the plasma sodium concentration of the hydrated toad and volumes are expressed as ml/100 g of hydrated toad. 2. The concentration of potassium in the plasma declines in the initial stages of dehydration and returns to the hydrated level only when the toad has lost 20-30 ml of water/100 g. 3. The sum of the concentrations of sodium and potassium in tissue water is increased in dehydrated toads according to the same relationship found for plasma sodium. 4. Tissues lose a smaller fraction of their water than does the whole toad during dehydration. The retention of water by tissues during dehydration is apparently associated with their uptake of electrolytes. 5. Dilute urine stored in the bladder may be utilized by toads during dehydration in maintaining the sodium concentration of the plasma at the normal level. As water is lost in excess of the volume of urine initially present in the bladder, the plasma sodium concentration increases as described in (1) above.

Evaluation of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin in pediatric patients with acute rotavirus gastroenteritis and dehydration

BACKGROUND Dehydration caused by acute rotavirus gastroenteritis is a frequent finding in pediatric patients. The most important treatment modality in these patients is recognising and treating dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and acute kidney injury. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is used widely as a biomarker for the diagnosis of acute or chronic renal injury in numerous ...

Vasopressin gene transcription increases in response to decreases in plasma volume, but not to increases in plasma osmolality, in chronically dehydrated rats.

The synthesis of arginine vasopressin (AVP) in the magnocellular neurons of the supraoptic (SON) and paraventricular nuclei (PVN) is physiologically regulated by plasma osmolality and volume. To clarify how the regulation of AVP gene transcription is affected by chronic dehydration, we examined changes in the transcriptional activities of AVP gene by plasma osmolality and volume in both euhydra...

Lipopolysaccharide reduces sodium intake and sodium excretion in dehydrated rats

The objective of this study was to find out if lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administered intraperitoneally affects sodium and water intake and renal excretion in dehydrated rats. LPS (0.3-5 mg/kg b.w.) inhibited 0.3M NaCl intake induced by subcutaneous injection of the diuretic furosemide (FURO, 10 mg/kg b.w.) combined with the angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor, captopril (CAP, 5 mg/kg b.w.)....
